San Marino. Secretary Canti at COP27: “Make the fight against climate change the priority of our countries’ political agendas”
The Secretary of State for Land, Environment and Agriculture, Stefano Canti, spoke today at the COP27 United Nations High Level Plenary with a speech in which he reiterated the importance of efforts to stop climate change calling on the small states to carry out together those great initiatives that it would not be possible to tackle individually.
“We are witnessing hard times – said the Secretary of State for the Territory and the Environment, Stefano Cantiat the opening of his speech at the United Nations High Level Plenary of the COP27 -. Today even the smallest goals seem impossible, but we must work to ensure that the fight against climate change becomes an absolute priority on the political agendas of our countries, without exception”.
In his speech, Canti explained how the Republic of San Marino, in recent years, has decided to become an open-air innovation laboratory, in order to attract new projects to tackle climate change on a small scale and asked once again to other Small States and to join efforts to implement common initiatives that would otherwise be out of their reach.
“My country has decided to focus on sustainable building – continued the Secretary of State for the Territory and the Environment -. We are proud to recall that last October the Republic of San Marino hosted the 83rd meeting of the Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Territorial Development of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and we are even more proud to announce that this meeting has resulted in the San Marino Declaration, a document that contains valuable principles for a more sustainable, equitable and inclusive urbanization. With the invaluable support of Unece, a new small forest has been planted in San Marino. What may appear to be a small effort in our tiny territory is significant in helping to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, as well as continue the transition to renewable energy and more sustainable business models.”
Finally, Stefano Canti made a further call to “work together to find solutions that help us overcome global climate challenges for future generations and also for ourselves”.
