“The Unesco Chair on ‘Sustainable Energy Communities’ is the culmination of a plan begun that the University of Pisa traced many years ago and through which our University wants to recompose the social and environmental fractures determined by an unsustainable development model – commented the Rector Paolo Mancarella – A commitment that now arises from the conquest that the link between education and social change is very close and that university education plays a fundamental role, through its research, training and third mission, in fostering a ever deeper diffusion, in Italy, of a solid culture of sustainability “.
A tool for energy security
In the intentions of the University of Pisa, this chair will have to develop energy communities, a more current tool than ever for self-sufficiency and energy security, but it will also serve to support the Unesco program for the resolution of emergencies in the African continent: the design of structures sustainable energies will have to involve African partners so that they are similar to the characteristics of the countries involved.
The aim of the chair is precisely the identification of the necessary principles and technical design tools for the construction of energy communities which, by integrating electrical and thermal systems powered by renewable sources in the territories concerned, can be totally autonomous.
