Salzburg AG: Photovoltaic offensive on farm roofs in Lungau
Salzburg AG, District Chamber of Farmers, Unesco Biosphere Park Salzburger Lungau and climate and energy model region Lungau want to support as many farmers in the region as possible in the construction of a photovoltaic (PV) system on their farm in cooperation.
LUNGAU. Salzburg AG has launched the “50 farms” project together with the district chamber of farmers (BBK) Lungau/Tamsweg, the Unesco Biosphere Park Salzburger Lungau and the Lungau climate and energy model region. The aim is to support as many farms in the region as possible in setting up a photovoltaic (PV) system on their farms, because farms would – so it was said at a presentation on Friday in Tamsweg – on the one hand have large roof areas and on the other hand have a higher energy consumption than, for example, single-family houses; That is why we have now focused on this target group. They only want to support systems on suitable roof areas and not on open spaces such as in the garden or on a meadow.
According to Salzburg AG, 42 farmers throughout Lungau have already opted for a PV system on their roof as a result of this initiative. If the weather conditions permit, 20 turbines are to be erected before the end of this year. Tamsweg, Unternberg, Mariapfarr, Zederhaus, Muhr, St. Michael, Göriach, Mauterndorf, Lessach, St. Andrä and Ramingstein are home to the 42 farmers who have already opted for a PV system from Salzburg AG.
“Technology, environmental behavior and also changing consumption are challenges that farmers in Lungau have to face,” explained District Farmers’ Chamber Chairman Johann Schitter in the press release from Salzburg AG, and he continued: “Last year we had long-term strategic influences and Measures are defined that are intended to preserve and promote us and our agriculture. Regionally generated energy and climate protection play a crucial role for us.”
“The PV-Höfe cooperation is intended to encourage farmers to supply their farms with energy from solar power. As a climate and energy model region, we pay particular attention to further promoting the generation of renewable energy in the region,” said Georg Macheiner of KEM Lungau in the Salzburg AG press release. Already at the first project presentation to regional farmers in Tamsweg in May 2022, there was great interest in their own PV system on the roof. After another information event and afternoon of consultation, more than 100 offers were made to farmers from the region.
“The current geopolitical situation has shown us once again that the expansion of independent, renewable energy sources cannot go fast enough. Every installed PV system not only supports the region and the farmers, it also makes us more independent from the international energy market. Therefore, this project is particularly important to us.”
Leonhard Schitter, CEO, Salzburg AG
According to its own information, Salzburg AG offers a comprehensive service for farmers in the Lungau: from the first visit to the farm through planning to the construction and completion of the system, the Salzburg AG experts would take care of the entire process take on for their customers. The PV system is owned by the agricultural sector and will be settled over a ten-year partial payment process. The average size of the PV systems for the Lungau farms is between 25 and 30 kWp.
