Richard Borne, municipal councilor of Blainville sur Orne (Calvados) and any new delegate in charge of sports (since October 24), received a gold medal from the French Basketball Federation, in recognition of 50 years of service rendered as a basketball volunteer, on Saturday October 15, 2022.
“The cellars were used as changing rooms”
As far as he looks back, he has always practiced or coached teams or refereed games. “The taste for the basket comes to me from my youth at La Guérinière. I started as a youngster, at 12, he recalls. With friends, we trained outside. And the cellars of the buildings served as locker rooms. There was no gymnasium yet. I liked this time of meeting with friends with a sport that I liked”.
The virus never left him again. In the army, he had formed a team.
We played barracks against barracks. When I returned, very quickly to Blainville, I created the first basketball club. Again, there was no gymnasium, we trained outside. Then the Lenormand gymnasium came out of the ground.
Richard Borne has a real passion for basketball. In the club, which he never left again, he held all the positions: player, coach, official referee, president, secretary, treasurer. Because “yes, it’s difficult to always find new members to make an association work”, he regrets.
But it is in the functions of referee that he has officiated for 45 years: in the department, in the region, in the national, at the Caen Basket Club, in the league of Burgundy and in the Paris region where he lived for a few years, so that he was an employee of the SMN. For 15 years, he has been attached to Ouistreham as a referee. Today, he still holds positions in departmental bodies, in particular as president of the senior sports commission.
At the Borne, “we are all grown up”
He devoted a life to his passion. “In the evening after work, that’s where I went”. And he also transmitted the passion to his three children and grandchildren. At the Borne, everyone practices the basket. “It must be said that we are cut out for this, we are all great,” he jokes.
Now, and without ever betraying his passion for this sport, Richard Borne has joined the municipal team in which he is the sports referent, giving the municipality the benefit of his expertise on the subject. “At the commune, this is my first mandate. I wanted to get involved alongside Lionel Marie, the mayor. A way to make myself useful, to support the sport that is so close to my heart, ”he says.
