San Marino declaration for sustainable architecture
The United Nations urge engineers and planners to put the principles of sustainability into practice. And on the occasion of the 83rd session of the Unece Committee (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) for Urban Development, Housing and Land Management, the governments present signed the “San Marino declaration“. The document contains a series of “Principles for urban design and sustainable and inclusive architecture”, to be applied to the design of all buildings and urban developments.
The San Marino Declaration, the commitment of States and operators
By signing this declaration, states recognize the role of architects, engineers, surveyors, urban planners and planners in ensuring sustainable, safe, healthy, socially inclusive, climate neutral and circular housing, urban infrastructure and cities. Sustainable construction, land management and urban development are in fact fundamental elements for achieving the sustainable development goals.
The San Marino Declaration was also welcomed by the main operators in the architecture sector.
In fact, among the first signatories there were Lords Norman FosterFoundation President of Norman Forster, e Stefano Boeri from Stefano Boeri Architectstogether with the Order of Architects of San Marino, Rimini and Pesaro in Italy.
The principles for sustainable urban design
The San Marino declaration that defines the goal of each city, infrastructure and building in line with a series of integrated and indivisible principles.
Among the main points, the importance in every project of the centrality of peopleof the social responsability andinclusiveness. As well as respect for the cultural identity, values and heritage of places, buildings and communities.
For limit the use of energy and resources the document suggests, as far as possible, to use recycled materials; redevelop the spaces; use rainwater and reduce wastewater production; encourage food production through urban agriculture, orchards and food forests.

Architecture must also respect nature through a design that considers plants, animals, other organisms and natural habitats.
There climate neutrality should be pursued through urban design and redevelopment, adopting creative solutions that reduce pollution and energy use, gradually eliminating unsustainable mobility systems and integrating green energy generation systems into the design of cities and buildings.
And new technologies and connectivity must be harnessed to improve the livability of all, including the most socially disadvantaged groups.
