Brazil invests in Portugal’s innovation ecosystem and bets on internationalization agenda
With the aim of Brazilian initiatives, initiatives in Portugal, 28 disembark at the end of Lisbon for an internationalization mission with no Web Summit 2022, one of the biggest innovation events in the world. There will be six intense days of activities including exclusive techniques, business rounds, opportunities for networking visits and connecting with the biggest businesses players of the local innovation ecosystem. In addition to this agenda, Sebrae, the institution corresponding to the Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation (IAPMEI) in Brazil, is committed to exchanges with Portugal, signs a partnership with the Institute and formalizes its membership of the World Trade Center Lisbon (WTC).
“This mission to Lisbon marks the bilateral cooperation with this vibrant president in Europe that is Portugal, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation”, explains the president of Sebra, Carlos Melles. According to him, is part of the strategy of the institution of initiatives to internationalize small Portuguese-speaking countries, with Portugal as the first country. “In addition to providing an approach to the largest players of the local innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, we are going to support the international expansion of these Brazilian companies so that their internationalization is indeed successful”, completes Melles.
This year, 80 Brazilian startups are part of the international mission, with up to 60 startups that will export during the Web Summit and 20 others will participate in the fair. The group provides technical support through training courses focused on investments, international expansion and foreign trade through partners ApexBrasil, Mistério das Relations Exteriores, Embassy of Brazil in Portugal, Softex and Serpro. Another 2000016 open in Lisbon, including the Amazon, complete the open bioeconomy program, which promotes the promotion of the bioeconomy, sustainable local development and innovation.
Since 2018, Portugal has become a priority country for a strategy of Sebrae’s international actions through the StartOut Brasil program, carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ApexBrasil and Anprotec. That year, the first incursion was carried out with 20 Brazilian startups, generating a total of U$ 2,797,000 in business. In 2021, still in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, 15 Brazilian startups moved US$ 498,158 in business in Lisbon. Such results promote how startups envision Portugal as a market and a strategic point for Europe
Calendar in Lisbon
The mission begins with the schedule of technical visits on October 30th and 31st and, on November 1st, comprises the Brazil Portugal Innovation Day. The event will have the presence of the ambassador of Brazil in Portugal, as well as representatives of IAPMEI, Startup Portugal, WTC, FIBE, Atlantic Hub, Portugal Ventures. Another highlight will be the signing of the memorandum between Sebrae and IAPMEI, which will formalize the development of innovation projects focused on the vocation of both countries. The program includes pitches, Demo Day and presentation of the case Rock in Rio, one of the most innovative projects in the world.
During the Web Summit, between the 2nd and 4th of November, the Brazil Pavilion will be the stage, for example, of ‘Meu Pé de Árvore’, a startup that enables the financing of the recovery of degraded areas through the restoration of Amazonian ecosystems, intermediating or financing partner companies with family members and communities in the region. Ahead of the internationalization project, Sebrae innovation analyst Cristina Mieko highlights that the internationalization of startups generates opportunities for business expansion in the country of origin and also allows validating innovative businesses that have not yet been adopted by the Brazilian market. “It is possible that a Brazilian technology-based startup or company may come up with an innovative solution that is not valid for reasons that the domestic market is not yet ready to welcome the innovation. The initiative is by Apex-Brasil, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) and the Brazilian Embassy in Lisbon, in partnership with Sebrae, Federal Data Processing Service (Serpro) and the Association for the Promotion of Excellence in Brazilian Software (Softex) , with the support of other Brazilian institutions.
