San Marino, former head of state Giacomo Simoncini is indicted for sexual harassment
The former Regent Captain of San Marino, the twenty-nine year old Giacomo Simoncini has been indicted in the small Republic for sexual harassment. Simoncini was elected in October 2021 and remained in office, as per the mandate that lasts six months, until April 2022. In the previous March an employee of Palazzo Pubblico, the equivalent of Palazzo Chigi in San Marino, accused him of undressing in front of her. At first, the story was reported to an employee of the regency and then passed on to the government. The woman then waited for the end of the mandate – therefore the month of April as required by the law – to report to the judiciary. The news of the indictment was spread by Simoncini himself, who went down in history for being the youngest elected head of state in the world. For the record, there are two captains regent in San Marino and they are renewed by law every six months.
“I’m innocent”
“The provision was formally communicated to me,” the former head of state wrote in an official note. Simoncini harshly rejects the accusations made by the employee. «I claim – he writes again – my complete extraneousness to the accusations and my full trust in the judicial authority. A trust not undermined by a decision that I do not share. But finally I will be able to prove my innocence in a public trial ». Simoncini now holds the role of Noi per la Repubblica’s adviser, a list formed by the Socialist Party, the Party of Socialists and Democrats, the Democratic Movement San Marino Together and the Noi San Marino party.
