Innsbruck – VSV 5:6 aet: VSV gave away a point in Innsbruck
The Villacher Adler already knew before the away game in Tyrol that the Innsbrucker Haie are the goal factory of the entire ICE league. It was important to keep the opponent’s concentrated offensive under control and to repeatedly set needle pricks. And that’s exactly what VSV managed to do from the first minute.
After just 46 seconds, the first pinprick was set. Ironically, the newly formed attacking line with Andrew Desjardins, Blaz Tomazevic and new signing Anthony Luciani was responsible for the early lead. However, This only lasted three minutes before the home side equalized through Daniel Jakubitzka and even turned the game around in the 14th minute with a goal from Tyler Coulter.
After the change of sides, it was the Draustadt team who increasingly took control of the game, creating more and more opportunities from a stable defense around goalie Alexander Schmidt. Philipp Lindner finally scored the deserved 2:2. A double strike by Benjamin Lanzinger and Tomazevic within 66 seconds saw VSV go into the second break 4-2 and when Desjardins (46′) increased the lead to 5-2 with his second goal, the decision seemed to have already been made.
But within 19 seconds everything was suddenly open again. Nico Feldner and Adam Helewka brought Innsbruck within one goal ten minutes from time. Outnumbered is then shortly before the end also the bitter compensation. In extra time, however, John Hughes redeemed VSV in his 800th league game on power play.
