Tender: awarded VS-Arzl will quickly double in size due to conversion
The expansion of the Arzl elementary school is scheduled to start in early 2024. The extension is intended to cover the additional space required and to reintegrate the kindergarten groups that are currently outsourced into the campus. Mario Gasser’s Innsbruck architects’ office won the architectural competition for the extension.
INNSBRUCK. The Arzl educational campus is to be expanded from 2024. In order to meet the great demand and the requirements of smaller group sizes, two kindergarten groups are currently housed in containers near the Arzler cemetery. An architectural competition preceded the planned expansion of the campus, which is intended to bring all groups back together at one location. The Innsbruck architect Mario Gasser won this. The project was made possible by the purchase of two plots of land that border the campus to the west. In total, this is an area of 2,032 square meters. The expansion will increase the existing space from 1,300 square meters to 2,400 square meters. “Increasing numbers of students at the educational and childcare facilities in Arzl mean there is a significant need for additional space. An extension of the existing school building is urgently needed. I am pleased that we were able to gain competent and reliable partners and can now take steps quickly to start construction,” says Mayor Georg Willi happily.
All under one roof
“In the future, the kindergarten site will be managed with a total of six groups, the two groups that are currently outsourced can be reintegrated into the campus. The school will not only be expanded in terms of area, but also designed to be flexible and appealing with regard to the quality of the all-day education and care offers. In addition to a larger lunch menu, the complete preservation of the green space was a comprehensive one, which is fully justified”, City Councilor Mayr and, together with Mayor Willi, is pleased that the project will achieve an improvement for the entire educational campus in Arzl. The project is not expected to be completed before 2026.
architectural competition
The Innsbruck real estate company, together with planning departments and municipal offices, carried out an architectural competition for the campus extension. A total of seven projects were submitted. The winning project by Gasser Architects was chosen unanimously. The jury was convinced that the “proposed solution of the extension building with special respect for the basic structure of the existing building and the adjacent natural area [..] exclusively offers a new spatial structure that meets contemporary educational requirements.” The jury also praised the redesign of the forecourt and the access situation. In addition to the mayor and the city councillor, the head of the IIG Franz Danler also congratulated the winner of the competition.
