Number of online shoppers in Portugal is growing above the EU average – Internet
The number of cyber shoppers in Portugal increased more in 2020 and 2021, rising above the average value of the European Union (EU). The data are from the most recent study “Digital Economy in Portugal”, presented during the Portugal Digital Summit’22organized by ACEPIand indicate that the country went from 45% of online shoppers in 2020 to a forecast of 56% in 2022while in the EU the difference is from 65% to 71%.
The results also reveal that 13% of Portuguese have made online purchases more than five times in the last three months, with 65% spending up to €300 in the same period. The most purchased category continues to be “Clothing, footwear and accessories”, with an increase in “meals designed for the product or in-store pick-up”.
O preferred payment method for buyers in Portugal is the reference and the most requested place of delivery is the home. When choosing an online store, great importance is therefore given to free delivery.
Regarding online shopping, the study also reveals that in Portugal buyers are younger than the EU average and that the smartphone is now the most used device for shopping on the internet.
ONE ease of purchase and flexibility of adjustments are the main reasons to choose ecommerce, according to respondents. As the main barriers related to habits, but more than 40% also mentioned security and trust issues.
The vast majority make domestic purchases, with 67% also doing so abroad. Price and product availability are the main reasons to buy online outside of Portugal.
