Conservative leader Kristersson elected as Sweden’s new prime minister
Sweden: The far-right Sweden Democrats increased in popularity — and helped drive Sweden’s right-wing bloc to victory.
Sweden’s Riksdag on Monday elected conservative leader Ulf Kristersson as prime minister at the head of a center-right coalition that has promised to crack down on crime and limit immigration in cooperation with a populist party with a far-right coalition.
Kristersson was voted into power 176-173 in his favor and will stake his claim today.
His three-party alliance swept to secure a majority in the Riksdag, or Riksdag, with 349 seats, after the September 11 election by teaming up with the Sweden Democrats, a party founded by right-wing extremists in the 1980s. The party has softened its image and moved towards the mainstream, but until recently was considered too radical to work with by all other parliamentary groups.
Kristersson worked last week on a deal in which his conservative moderate party is poised to form a government with the support of smaller parties known as Christian Democrats and Liberals.
No more asylum for refugees
Kristersson’s Moderate party agreed on a joint manifesto that meant making it harder for asylum seekers to stay in Sweden and easier for government authorities to deport foreign citizens with a criminal background. Gang violence has become a major concern for Sweden, especially in neighborhoods dominated by immigrant criminals, and this is seen as a major reason for the country’s shift in foreign policy, particularly to crack down on migrants.
At the same time, Sweden’s former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson resigned on Thursday after an incomparable right-wing and far-right bloc narrowly won Sunday’s election. The far-right, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD) are poised to become the largest party and will have a major influence on the new administration’s program.
The latest poll results were very much in line with mass expectations. Sweden is facing an ever greater challenge. Compared to the ruling center-left bloc, the right, especially the Sweden Democrats, will propose some bold and radical reforms, which cater to the mentality of the Swedish public. Issues such as immigration and crime and gang violence have been the Swedish focus recently, and it is these extreme right-wing parties that the Sweden Democrats assured to initiate measures against, during preliminary investigation campaigns.

Dissatisfaction with following the US policy of sanctioning Russia and thus creating an energy crisis in the country
The Swedish public is also dissatisfied with how the current government is handling the energy crisis. Andersson’s loss may also have to do with the energy policy of her government. When Sweden and other European countries followed the USA in sanctions against Russia, it turned out that only Europe is suffering from the energy crisis, while the USA is not bothered by the lack of energy. The public tends to be disappointed that the government blindly follows the lead of the United States.
Right-wing insurgency in Europe
Forming governments in parliamentary multi-party systems has always been tricky. But these days, when Europe’s established political parties are fracturing at the expense of new right-wing populist parties rising up.
Sweden is the latest example of such a political stalemate. A month after the parliamentary elections, in which the far-right Sweden Democrats received a considerable share of the vote — 17.5 percent, or 62 mandates out of 349, and now form a coalition government.
Populism is on the rise in Europe, and far-right forces have increased their influence in European politics. French far-right “Rassemblement National leader Marine Le Pen” had a strong showing in the 2022 presidential election.

One reason why the European far-right parties have gained support and influence is that the traditional established parties in Europe cannot come up with satisfactory solutions to the growing number of problems in Europe, such as the economic evils due to the influx. of refugees, as well as the heavy burden of social welfare, while the set of rhetoric and proposals of the extreme right are more likely to win people’s hearts.
Furthermore, faced with many conflicts and challenges, European countries tend to seek an unadventurous solution as a response, that is, to divert domestic attention by emphasizing external threats or challenges.
The destinies of European countries are linked. When a far-right party gains power in one country, it will soon have an impact in other countries. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that far-right parties will become popular in more European countries. Sweden is not just an example – it may be preceded by examples before.
