The electronic access organization Bluesmart from Winkhaus secures Mirabell Palace and various municipal properties in Salzburg.
The municipal authorities of the city of Salzburg reside in the baroque UNESCO world heritage Mirabell Palace; From a visual point of view, time seems to have stood still in Mozart’s birthplace – but if you look at the details, you will discover Winkhaus’ state-of-the-art electronic access organisation.
Electronic access organization secures municipal properties
The electronic access organization Bluesmart secures the seat of government as well as municipal properties and sports facilities – including the popular Volksgarten ice arena, the Liefering sports center and the historic Volksgarten swimming pool. In total, more than 1,000 electronic door cylinders and many other intelligent system components, such as upload readers and ETB-IM electronic door fittings, ensure controlled access in the state capital.
There are various reasons why Bluesmart is so popular in the city of Mozart. One of them is the compact shape of the door cylinder, because they also fit in historical doors and are subtly subordinate to the aesthetics of the surroundings. The solution also offers a high level of flexibility and reliability, which the decision-makers relied on right from the start. Building management technology from Winkhaus has been in use for many years, and the reliable service provided by the competent technicians from Grödig, where Winkhaus Austria is based, is appreciated. A good reason to successively expand the existing system and integrate new functions.
Mirabell Castle
The ensemble of the baroque Mirabell Palace is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city and at the same time serves modern administrative and governmental purposes. The departments with a lot of public traffic, such as the passport office or the city treasury, are on the ground floor of the building. Since these are sensible areas that are now easily accessible to citizens, but are also effectively protected against unwanted access, security here poses a particular challenge.
In order to resolve the alleged contradiction between a secure lock and a range of services that is close to the citizen and to save costs at the same time, it was decided back in 2006 to use an electronic blue-chip locking system from Winkhaus. Since then, it has secured the outer skin and was already compatible with the existing alarm system. Today, the next generation of the company’s electronic access organization, the Bluesmart system, is in use, which is also compatible with existing security systems.
Open to extensions
With their inconspicuous shape, the flush electronic door cylinders do not diminish the visual appeal of the historic doors in Mirabell Palace. There is no need for wiring because the battery-powered cylinders work offline. They are also cold-resistant and low-maintenance: depending on the type, the batteries have a service life of up to ten years. There is no need to oil the cylinders, as is known from the field of mechanics, since the tip of the electronic key is made of plastic and does not cause any metal abrasion on the contact surfaces.
Since the access control functioned reliably from the start, numerous extensions were added over the years. Today more than 430 cylinders secure the castle complex. Ancillary buildings in the associated city of Salzburg: Gardens were also switched to electronic building security. Seven upload readers in the lock ensure that the Bluesmart keys are supplied with up-to-date user rights.
Handy keys help with organization
Around four hundred electronic keys are used in Mirabell Palace to open the electronically secured doors. Around three hundred employees, the mayor, local councilors and faction members of the political parties go in and out with it. External organizations and the church, for example, also use the premises.
Only a flexible locking system is able to reliably manage access for such diverse groups. The access organization supports users with a variable color concept: the electronic keys have different colors, which enable them to be assigned quickly to the individual user groups. Employee keys also contain an additional transponder for time recording. All keys are protected by a particularly stable plastic jacket that is waterproof (IP 68) and resistant to hand disinfectants, is easy to clean and has a good grip. Handling is very easy and is based on the usual locking behavior: the key is simply inserted and turned. The authentication check takes place in the background and goes unnoticed by the user.
Central control
The management software for the lock’s electronic locking system runs on a central server. Five clients have been created in the system so that those responsible on site – such as in the swimming pool or in the sports hall – can work with them without having to go to the town hall.
What means a considerable amount of work with a mechanical locking system can be done with the electronic solution with a few mouse clicks on the computer: If a key loss is reported, the authorization for this short-term hand of the key can be withdrawn. Changing locking authorizations are managed just as easily. The Winkhaus Bluecontrol Professional software provides user-friendly support. And if an update or maintenance is due for the program, Winkhaus provides faster and competent support. Therefore, the employees responsible for the locking system can look forward to the resulting relocation movements of the administration at any time.
Access to sport well organized
The sports facilities in the city of Mozart are much younger than the castle. The Volksgartenbad has its roots in the late 19th century, the Red Bull Ice Arena was built in the 1960s, while the Liefering sports center was only built a few years ago.
The outdoor pool, which the people of Salzburg affectionately call “Volksi”, grew with the oldest and also got an electronic locking system in 2020. An upload reader and thirty Bluesmart door cylinders secure the outdoor and indoor systems.
Salzburg’s ice rink is in the immediate vicinity. It offers space for 3,400 spectators and was converted into a multifunctional arena at the beginning of the year. Professionals and amateurs of all ages from different clubs train here. The requirements for access management are therefore high. A wide range of ice sports activities is possible on the two ice rinks, one of which is outdoors: in addition to public and formation skating, there is also ice hockey, figure skating, curling and short track. In the summer months from April to September, trade fairs, concerts, musicals and exhibitions also take place here. Nearly 300 electronic door cylinders, which minimize the risk of injury from fingers being crushed and offer few points of attack for access or intentional damage, as well as three upload readers control access. In the administration area, the doors are equipped with electronic door fittings (ETB-IM). In addition to electronic keys, employees also use transponder tapes to open doors without contact.
Technology for smart city standard
The Liefering sports center was the first sports hall to be built in Austria in 2016 as a plus-energy building. They have met the smart city standards and have been awarded the “Klimaaktiv Gold Standard”. The building generates more energy than it needs itself. Its three-field sports hall offers space for numerous sports and is also geared towards disabled sports. A movement room and office space for the clubs complete the offer. The building’s intelligent technology, which also includes a Bluesmart locking system, fades into the background visually. 120 door cylinders and three upload readers secure the interior and exterior areas. The floodlight system and other applications are also efficiently controlled.
