Cologne Cathedral illuminated again despite the energy crisis: “Signs of hope”
The Cologne Cathedral is illuminated again at night – despite the energy crisis. There is a special message behind it: a “sign of hope and confidence”.
Cologne – The Cologne Cathedral has remained dark since August. As a result of the energy crisis. Most recently, from 10 p.m., it was “lights out” at what is probably the most famous building in Cologne. But that’s over now – at least partially. Because the tops of the twin towers are now illuminated from the inside. So you can see the Cologne Cathedral again at night.
Cologne Cathedral illuminated despite the energy crisis: “Signs of hope”
The spiers of Cologne Cathedral have been shining again since last weekend. And that has a special background. “The cathedral welcomes and supports all urban energy saving measures,” the cathedral chapter explained on Monday (October 17). “They are indispensable in these times.” But the cathedral spiers should “remain visible in the cityscape all night long, even in times of crisis – as a subtle sign of hope and confidence,” the statement continues.
According to the cathedral chapter announcement, the cathedral chapter and the city have decided on this. However, the cathedral is not completely and fully illuminated. It is reduced lighting. Only the two tips are illuminated from the inside. In the past, the entire cathedral was illuminated at night and could be seen from a great distance. The “very reduced lighting accent” is expected to remain until the end of February.
Energy crisis in Cologne: Cologne Cathedral illuminated again – what about the others?
However, the city’s other energy-saving measures will probably not be relaxed for the time being. A lot of electricity can be saved simply by insulating the street lighting, as RheinEnergie reported when asked by 24RHEIN. “By dimming around 20,000 light points, around 4,000 kWh of energy consumption can be saved every day.” This corresponds to the power consumption of a 3-person household, which is between 2,500 and 4,500 kilowatt hours.
Cologne wants to save energy: The measures at a glance
- The street lights in Cologne, the lights are dimmed to 50 percent at 11 p.m. In addition, the lighting is switched on later and switched off earlier
- The lighting of certain buildings (e.g. historic town hall, Hohenzollernbrücke and Severinsbrücke) and other lighting at a total of over 132 objects will initially be switched off at 11 p.m. and from autumn at 10 p.m
- The lighting of the pylons at the RheinEnergie Stadium will be switched off
- The temperature in the city offices should be a maximum of 19 degrees during the heating period
- In summer the air conditioning of the rooms reduced to a minimum
- In schools without an open all-day school or holiday operation, the suspension of a room temperature reduction will be reintroduced during the holiday season
- City staff is sensitized to energy-efficient behavior
- The operating parameters (e.g. room temperature and energy consumption) can be adjusted, for example in vehicle halls, car washes, warehouses, etc., so that they are only kept frost-free
