The Indian badminton teamled by Unnati Hooda and Anupama Upadhyaywill compete at 2022 Badminton World Junior Mixed Team Championships on Monday it starts in Santander, Spain.
India is the fifth seed and has been drawn in Group B with Slovenia, Australia, China and Iceland.
There are 38 teams in the competition, which were divided into eight groups.
Each group winner will advance to the quarter-finals, with second-placed teams competing for places 9-16, third-placed teams for 17-24, fourth-placed teams for 25-32 and fifth-placed teams for 33-38. .
The World Junior Mixed Team Badminton Championship was first played in 2000 and was biennial until 2006. Since then, the junior event has been held every year.
However, it was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the 2022 edition marks the return of the championship after two years.
Last time in 2019, Indonesia won, beating China 3:1 in the final. However, China has dominated the tournament, winning 13 titles since its inception. South Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia are the only other teams to win the title.
The Indian team finished 12th in 2019 and will be hoping to better that record this time around. India’s best finish at the meet was fourth in the 2008 event.
14-year-old Unnati Hooda, the youngest Indian to win the BWF Super 100 event and the world’s No. 5 junior, will headline the fight alongside world No. 3 Anupam Upadhyay.
Each tie at the 2022 Badminton World Junior Mixed Team Championship will have five matches – one each between men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
