Bad weather in Crete: One dead, one missing – Government echelon in the area
Searches to locate the woman who is missing in the area of Agia Pelagia in Crete, after the passage of the severe storm that left behind a dead person, have so far been fruitless.
Both people were in the same car that was swept away by the rapids. The investigations started anew with the first light of day and as stated in the show “And around the city” and Yannis Theodosis, the mayor of Malevizio, Menelaos Bokeas, they are not only carried out in the sea, where the fatal car ended up, but also in the flood protection canal, even on the ground floors of houses and shops, where the water carried tons of transportable materials. Mr. Bokeas spoke of a natural disaster and incalculable disasters along the entire coastal front of Agia Pelagia as well as Paleokastro and Lygaria. As he noted, the volume of water was such that it could not contain any flood control project.
Today in Crete, a government echelon should be found under the deputy minister of the interior, Stelios Petsas, and the deputy minister, rather than the prime minister, in charge of State Aid and Distance from Natural Disasters, Christos Triandopoulos, with the participation of the general secretary of Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, the secretary of Agriculture of Development and Food, Christiana Kalogirou, the general secretary of Spatial Planning and Urban Environment, Efthymios Bakoyannis, and the general secretary of Infrastructure, Maria – Ellis Gerardi.
The echelon will complete the areas of Heraklion and Lasithi that were affected by the extreme weather phenomena, while it will have meetings with the local self-government and service agents for the launch of the support and restoration plan after the natural disaster.
At the same time, a number of house and shop owners are trying to remove from their properties, mud and materials that were carried by the rushing waters, while crews from the Region and the municipalities are on foot to deal with problems caused by landslides on the road network and in parts of the BOAK . .
At the scene of the tragedy on Saturday night was the president of OASP and professor of natural disaster management Efthymis Lekkas who likened the rapidity of the waters to a “tsunami”, clarifying that another anti-flood project would not have been able to contain the torrent.
Apart from Agia Pelagia, problems are found in Lygaria, Paliokastro and Karteros, also in Sitia, where the government echelon will later be found.
The authorities in Kasos, Karpathos, Rhodes, Halki and Kastellorizo remain on alert due to the movement of bad weather. Residents have received a message via 112 warning them of possible dangerous weather conditions in the next 24 hours and calling on them to avoid unnecessary travel.
