Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October 2022 return, for the eleventh edition, the FAI Autumn Daysthe great street event that the FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano ETS dedicates each year, in autumn, to the cultural and landscape heritage of our country, animated and initiated by the FAI Youth Groups, with the participation of all the FAI Delegations and Groups widespread and active throughout Italy.
The Delegates and Volunteers of the Foundation, as every year, will make available energy, creativity and enthusiasm to reveal to the Italians the richness and variety of the heritage of history, art and nature that is in every corner of this surprising and unexpected country, and which does not only consist in great monuments or museums, but also in unpublished and unknown buildings and landscapes, special places that preserve and testify small and great stories, cultures and traditions, which are fully “our heritage”, and which therefore we are all caring for and protecting for present and future generations, as it is in the FAI’s mission, first of all beginning to know them, to discover their value.
There are over 700 proposals in 350 cities of Italy, in all regions: wonders to discover, hidden in little-known and generally inaccessible places, which tell the story and nature of Italy. Participants will be offered a non-mandatory contribution starting from 3 euros, which will support the mission and activity of the FAI. Those who wish can further support the FAI with higher contributions or with the annual registration, which can be subscribed online or in the square during the event.
The proposals of the FAI delegation in Verona
PALAZZO DEL CAPITANIO – courtyard of the Court, Verona. Located in the heart of Verona, the Palazzo del Capitanio was one of the residences of the city power. The Palazzo, begun in the second half of the thirteenth century and enlarged and modified over the centuries, is part of the first nucleus of buildings of the Scaligera family, built near the church of Santa Maria Antica. Under the Republic of Venice, the Palace became the seat of the Venetian Captain’s office, and then became a prison citizen until the mid-nineteenth century. Between 2009 and 2010 he comes from the Cariverona Foundation which started a restoration campaign very attentive to the historical and philological values of the building. And it is thanks to the Cariverona Foundation that for the FAI Autumn Ginate it will be possible to visit the Palazzo del Capitanio, in an itinerary the Court Courtyard will wind, to continue in some rooms on the floor that moves on the tower called of Alberto I and through the loggia overlooking the inner courtyard of the corner room of the Capitanio tower.
SAN PIETRO CASTLE – piazzale Castel San Pietro, 2 Verona. Erected on the homonymous hill that rises behind the Roman Theater, it has dominated Verona since the Middle Ages. From the Scaligeri to the Visconti, to the Serenissima it has a control function of the city. With Napoleon he is partly concerned, to see with the Austrians the construction of a military citadel. During the two days, visitors will be able to discover the history of the place and the Habsburg building, admiring its military structures and archaeological excavations. Exceptionally and only for FAI members and those who register on site, during opening hours it will be possible to access the terrace located on the top floor of the structure, once strategic for defensive military action, today a romantic location.
PIEVE DI SANT’ANDREA – meeting in piazza della Repubblica, Sommacampagna. The ancient Pieve, a splendid example of Romanesque architecture, was built on the ruins of a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Leituria, near the oldest settlement in the capital. From the 5th century it acquired the characteristics of a Christian church, in Romanesque style, and preserves the remains of splendid frescoes, among which a majestic Last Judgment stands out. During the two days, the Ciceroni Apprentices of the Carlo Anti Institute of Villafranca accompany visitors from Piazza della Repubblica to the church, illustrating its history, architecture and decorations.
BARBAROSSA’S FOOTSTEPS ON THE VIA DRY – meeting in piazza IV novembre, Povegliano Veronese. The visit to Povegliano – Madonna dell’uva dried includes a gentle walk for all ages with the story of the figure of Federico Barbarossa, the geo-political context of the time and the stop in Povegliano of the emperor with his army, documented in two parchments written on 26 and 27 October 1154. The itinerary will culminate with a visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the dried grapes, dating back to the 12th century and containing the precious high altar, as well as numerous paintings including the important fresco of the Dormition di Maria attributed to the school of Altichiero and Avanzo (14th century). The visit emphasizes the contrast between the two protagonists of the visit: the authoritative, combative, bloodthirsty figure of Barbarossa and the delightful sanctuary of the Madonna of the dried grapes, a place of peace and devout prayer.
Registration and information
The event, in addition to being a moment of encounter between FAI and the people, is also an important fundraising event and an opportunity to tell people about the objectives and mission of the Foundation.
