Most of the comments related mainly to the explosion of the Kerch Bridge, stating that Vladimir Putin decided to bomb mainly for the domestic audience. Do you agree?
Yes. He cannot allow himself to be perceived as a weak person. For years, he spoke of Ukrainians with absolute contempt as a fake nation that is an offshoot of Russia with no claim to its own existence.
In the war, it turns out that he made a mistake when he believed his own bluster about how Ukraine would collapse like a house of cards upon first contact with Russian troops. This time he needed a response to the attack on the bridge. He doesn’t want people to get the feeling that he doesn’t know what he’s doing, so he tries to camouflage the reality with attacks.
War is supposed to have rules, but the rockets went to civilian targets. Is this not real terrorism?
War has its rules. It’s a miserable experience in itself, but since the First World War we’ve had a set of rules aimed at making it a little less miserable, bloody, disgusting than it needs to be. The rules distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate goals.
The Kerch bridge was a legitimate target, the main supply artery for the aggressor, which supplies the troops in the south of Ukraine. It would be illegitimate for the Ukrainian military command not to attack. They had every right to do so within the law. The Russian response was an exact repetition of the rules of war. Bombs fell on Shevchenko Boulevard, a children’s park and the German consulate in Kyiv.
