Portugal will face Cameroon or Thailand for a place in the World Cup | Women’s World Cup
Portugal will face Cameroon or Thailand, on 22 February, in the fight for a place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the inter-confederation play-off draw dictated.
Second in their qualifying group, behind Germany, Portugal qualified for the UEFA play-off and beat Belgium 2-1 and Iceland 4-1 after extra time. With the third best record of the three winners of the European play-off, behind Switzerland and the Republic, Portugal entered the interconfederation play-off, which will take place in New Zealand.
By having the best ranking of the ten participants, Portugal was seeded in Group A of three teams and went directly to the final. Thus, they will face New Zealand after the friendly game scheduled for February 17, at Waikato Stadium, in Hamilton, while on the half day Cameroon and Thailand will fight in the final of Group A, in the same place, for the right to face the team by Francisco Neto on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, in the final.
The last three of the 32 spots in the finals to be played in Australia and New Zealand, from July to August 20, 2023, will come from the three inter-confederation play-off matches. The draw for the finals is scheduled for 07:30 (Mainland Portugal) on 22 October at the Aotea Center in Auckland.
