David doubled in cruise from Lille to Strasbourg
RC Strasbourg Alsace 0-3 LOSC Lille
THE GAME
Lille took the lead at the Stade de la Meinau from the penalty spot four minutes before half-time, David converting after Maxime Le Marchand fouled Ismaily in the box. It was a second successful shot in as many appearances for David, who scored the game’s only goal in last week’s derby against RC Lens from the penalty spot.
This time, LOSC added new goals in the second half, with Timothy Weah playing a key role after coming off the bench. It was 2-0 in the 76th minute as Strasbourg failed to clear their lines before David converted a low ball driven into the box from the right by Weah.
The United States international was once again the provider as Lille claimed a convincing win with 10 minutes to play. This time he coached Rémy Cabella to score with a clinical first time to make it 3-0.
Paulo Fonseca’s side secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season, not to mention a second clean sheet in a row. The result puts them two points behind fourth-placed northern neighbors Lens, but ahead of the rest of the weekend’s action. Meanwhile, Strasbourg are in danger of falling back into the bottom four over the weekend after failing to capitalize on their first win of the season, recorded last time out against Angers SCO.
THE PLAYER: Jonathan David
The Canadian forward is in fine form and is now the division’s leading scorer with nine goals to his name. He’s scored five times in Lille’s last four outings, and in his current form should comfortably improve on his tally of 15 Uber Eats Ligue 1 goals from last campaign.
THE STAT: 6
Strasbourg have failed to win any of their first six home games of a top-flight campaign for the fourth time in their history. The last time was in 2005-06. Moreover, Fonseca has now won six of his first 11 games in charge of Lille. Only René Girard (7) has done better among LOSC coaches for more than 75 years of top-flight football.
