Saving energy in Mondeville: “it’s a necessity”

Like every household, the questions of energy savings and the cost of inflation also question the municipality of Mondevilleclose to Caen (Calvados).
“Winter is approaching, we are looking at how we are going to manage all of this”, slips the mayor Hélène Burgat. “Two times ago: for the past year, we have redirected most investments to energy renovation actions, but that takes two years. This winter, there may be a global problem of energy supply for France, we have to be prepared. And also financial, because even if we have enough energy, we will have to pay the bill next year”.
Optimization of sports equipment
The municipality has launched numerous energy projects in the city. Elected officials are also wondering whether or not they will lower the temperature in gymnasiums by 1 or 2°C, while being aware that behavior must be changed. “We look at things specifically in sports equipment. We had the chance to do sports in shorts and tank tops, regardless of the outside temperature. We are working on the file, knowing that it will not be like last year, ”said Hélène Burgat. For the mayor of Mondeville, there is the question of temperatures and the optimization of equipment.
Some are heated all day, while they are only used for two hours. You may need to move some activities that radiate more heat to warmer places, and other sports that are more intense in others. We try to do things more finely. It would be irresponsible of me for nothing to change, taxpayers expect it. This will change practices.
Hélène Burgat knows that she was pressed by events to react, “but we cannot be in crisis management all the time”.
“Shocking to use drinking water for flowers”
Ditto for water management with drought. “From now on, we have to think about putting in self-sufficient plants, which don’t need to be watered every week in June, July and August”. Even if there is no drought next year. “There is something special about using drinking water, a rare and expensive commodity, to water flowers. We must find ways to recover water from buildings and have species that can withstand more heat. We have to adapt more quickly than we had imagined”.
