Rhaen Targaryen got married in Portugal (the karst foiy scene) – NiT
A year ago, the filming of “Dragon House”a prequel to “The Game of Thrones”, took place in the villages of Monsanto and Penha Garcia, in Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Branco district. HBO’s region trimming has been described in Portugal with region production that was never big in terms of region production that was never big in Portugal.
Now that “House of the Dragon” is on the air — 8 of the 10 from the first season are available — there are some details. While it’s hard to figure out where the world was created for the production of costumes like special sets and thought-to-detail sets by art direction), NiT discovered the intimate marriage between Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen was shot in Monsanto.
Who says so is one of the Portuguese actors who participated in “House of the Dragon”, Gonçalo Nogueira. Born in Coimbra, 23 years old, he participates in the eighth episode of the series. He is the “dragon keeper” who receives the bag with the dragon eggs that Daemon Targaryen gives him. This scene, which takes place in Dragonstone, was also filmed in Monsanto — on October 29, 2021. We can see the turn of the fifth minute of the most recent chapter in the story.
Gonçalo Nogueira has always been a huge fan of “Game of Thrones”. In addition, he had some experience as an actor — although, from an early age, he did in the last few years that he did theater. “It was my favorite series. When I saw that opening a casting call, I didn’t even think twice. And I signed up without any expectations. Me and many others who ended up being chosen”, he explains to NiT.
He applied in August, two months later he was called by the production. “It was a very sudden thing. On top of that, it was at the time of Covid-19, made of tests before going there.” He had to go to Cáceres, Spain, to do the so-called “fitting” — the characterization process for a character, so that everything is defined before the day of filming itself. A week or so later, he went to Monsanto half to shoot his scene. Gonçalo Nogueira was considered a “featured extra” — that is, he is not a mere extra who can appear in the background of a scene, but an extra with real prominence at a given moment in the narrative.
He was soon referred to be a dragon keeper. With him were other Portuguese than other destinations — some, for example, would have to be noble in the scenes. But do not divulge information about any, as they avoid keeping secret and information leaks.
“They said I was a dragon. They are not specific. I never really knew what my character was. I only knew it was related to dragons. Then they shaved my hair, put those clothes on me and became more confused. [risos]. Do not locate even realize what was going to happen.”
Gonçalo Nogueira, left.
Gonçalo Nogueira is a student worker in the area of management and marketing. On the 28th of October of last year, he was working at the Web Summit, in Lisbon. He went to Coimbra, where he only slept a couple of hours, and then left for Monsanto at three in the morning. “Then the makeup artists put a lot of makeup on my face and I remember they put it under my eyes. I was already tired, but with that make-up, looking at myself in the mirror, it seems like I wasted years of life there”, he says.
He was in Monsanto from six in the morning until 7 pm. In the morning, he was being characterized and getting ready. He was alone that day, because he was the only extra needed. Otherwise, there were only the same actors. In the morning it was intimate, that their vows are expressed and they are married. Gonçalo Nogueira was waiting for the actors Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy at Monsanto Castle.
“She was waiting for them, they came in later and it was a surprise because I was an extra. I wasn’t expecting to be with them”, he explains. “Matt was very nice, he said my name right the first time, which was surprising [risos]. I didn’t talk to Emmy because she was having lunch and I thought it was rude to interrupt. All the Strong kids were there too — all the mothers [dos jovens atores] and all, I spoke to them too.”
Then, for the eggs all afternoon recording that scene where Daemon Taryen delivers the dragon eggs to be preserved to the dragon’s guardians. “The weather was complicated that day, it was very cloudy, rain, wind and cold. Understood a little how, it went a little further than they anticipated.” Gonçalo Nogueira no longer recorded exactly how many times they recorded a scene, but it could have been “dozens” of times. “Absolutely 10 more takes, from multiple angles.”
Despite being a small scene, a production equipment did everything to get the perfect version of that moment in the plot. The young Portuguese man notices another detail that demonstrates the attention to every detail. “I spent between half an hour and an hour with the makeup artists giving my hand a burn. This is just to get a sense of the attention to detail that the series gives — which you can barely see in the final product.”
As long as I was there, the “shooting”, burn marks and ash on the face, wasn’t happening in that scene. Daemon Targaryen addresses the dragonkeepers in Valyrian, so Gonçalo Nogueira had no idea what he meant as words spoken by actor Matt Smith.
“I never knew what it was. It was my colleague on the side who, between takes, asked him what was going on. I needed to know to help a little with my reaction, what to do, etc. of the law, because he is giving dragon eggs without saying anything to anyone’. I tried to rebel that by showing some concern.”

The scene appears in the eighth episode — it was filmed in Monsanto.
Gonçalo Nogueira did not see the dragon eggs, but he carried them and confirms that they are the turns. “I kept them in my suitcase, I remember feeling around to see what it was, because they didn’t say anything to me. That was heavy.”
Although Mons is in the interior of Portugal, next to the border with Spain, the scenes take place in Dragonstone, which is on the coast of Westeros. That means the entire ocean we see in those scenes obviously doesn’t exist and was created with special effects in post-production. “They changed that completely and it is very well done.”
The Portuguese reveals that other strangers in Portugal will appear in the last two of the first season of “House of the Dragon”. And what a story even other extra figures that should appear in this chapter of the.
“It was one of the best days of my life. It was totally unexpected. These are childhood dreams that we all have and that we think will never happen. But it happened. It took me back in time. Because when I was younger, I loved ‘Game of Thrones’. However, I have always been very attentive to this new series, to see what could happen. And I was called, it seems it was an impossible thing that happened from one moment to the next. Really was. I loved the people and team. Super professional, super nice, the episode’s director herself — Geeta Patel — was super approachable and came to talk to me to give me tips. It was a doubt without an unforgettable experience.”
Gonçalo Nogueira also adds that this experience made him want to return to acting. “It awakened the desire to represent that I had already lost some time. I don’t know, I felt something I haven’t felt in a long time. My interest in acting has returned and that’s what I want to do. Maybe in plays, getting into some kind of program here in the region, I don’t know. I’m still looking too [risos].”
As for the reactions of family and friends, he says that the most appropriate word will be “pride”, came as a surprise to many. “I always tried to keep it a secret, because I was afraid the scene would be cut. [risos]. And then it was creating that expectation of ‘I’m going to appear in the series’ and then I didn’t. I’ve always had that fear. I’m just now announcing this to the crowd. And I was sure the scene was bad too. Though he was sure they would never let a bad scene pass. It really made me happy.”
