Portugal supports the UN resolution condemning the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia
The emergency meeting of the General Assembly to address the region of Ukrainians by Russia was resumed this morning (local time) at the international organization’s headquarters in New York with the positions of the diplomats, at which time a Portuguese representative to the UN appealed to the 193 member states voting in favor of the resolution.
“Portugal firmly annexes the so-called referendums organized by Russia and their subsequent to the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporijia. This is the largest part of the World War and has been an annex to the act since the Second International War and the consecration of the UN”, defended the Charter.
“Portugal, these illegal referendums and annexations are null and void and do not recognize their political and legal effects. We reaffirm our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial autonomy and independence, its internationally recognized borders and Ukraine’s right to ongoing foreign aggression,” added a diplomat.
In this sense, the Portuguese ambassador announced that Portugal co-sponsored the resolution and will vote in favor of it.
“We mainly encourage others [Estados-membros] to do the same”, he appealed to the former Secretary of State for European Affairs.
“We must continue to face this situation collectively to preserve an international order. This is the time to act. (…) The time to respect the principles of peace and security that are the basis of this organization ”, she stressed.
Ana Paula also appealed to the 2nd for an agreement on the export of products from Ukraine, signed on July 2nd by order of the UN.
In addition to demanding that the annexation of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporijia be reversed, the one resolved by the West – and will be voted on at the end of the statements by Russia diplomatic present at the meeting – declares that Moscow’s actions violate the sovereignty and territorial of Ukraine. and are “inconsistent” with the principles of the UN Charter.
The resolution says the annexations also “have no validity under international law and do not form the basis for any alternation of the status of these regions of Ukraine.”
The document demands that it “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its forces and forces from the territory of Ukraine recognized within the framework of the resolution of the conflict, through political dialogue, through, mediation, other peaceful means”.
Russia for not the States3 that more support would vote, waiting for some of the 19-members if the votes were. However, the General Assembly decided that the vote will be taken publicly.
The 193 UN Member States begin the debate on this issue on Monday and, after a break on Tuesday, are expected to conclude it today, thus continuing with the vote.
In recent days, the European Union) and the United States have been trying to get as much support as possible for the draft resolution, in an attempt to clear Russia’s isolation on the international stage.
This meeting follows an imposition imposed by Moscow in an organized resolution that was voted on last September 30 at the UN Security Council, and which condemned the referendums in eastern and southern Ukraine, and their consequent annexation by the Federation. Russia.
In the General Assembly, no country has veto power, but the body’s solutions carry less weight than the Security Council.
