Portugal completes the ratification process of Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership – News
The conclusion of the Treaty took place through the deposit of the instruments of ratification of the North Atlantic, by the treaty, Francisco Duarte Lopes, delivery by the Ministry of Affairs and Foreigners in a brief communiqué.
“This process, of great historical significance, highlights Portugal’s commitment to the security of the Euro-Atlantic”, said the Portuguese diplomacy in the same information note.
“Cooperation and the domain of cooperation and solidarity in the security and defense countries in the essential area for the strengthening of the alliance with NATO will contribute to the strengthening of the alliance and the domain in the essential area for the exterior and national defense”, “The cooperation and the essential domain for the strengthening of the two countries alliance with NATO”.
At the NATO summit held in Madrid at the end of June, the leaders of the current 30 member states agreed to invite the two Nordic countries to join the Alliance after Turkey had waived its initial veto.
Sweden and Finland, which provisionally guarantee the status of “invited” countries, will only become full members after ratification of the access protocols by the parliaments of the 30 countries that make up the Atlantic Alliance.
So far, 28 NATO member states have joined Sweden and Finland. Only the parliaments of Hungary and Turkey did not give their final consent.
The Portuguese parliament ratified the accession on the 16th of September.
