Munich today – news from October 11th, 2022 – Munich
“It’s better not to talk about it” is still the motto far too often. That says Siegfried Benker, the executive director of the Munich counseling center. At Before we talk – with those affected by racist discrimination and right-wing violence. In other places, however, talking is difficult. Those seeking advice experience this again and again. And that also applies to places where talking is actually part of everyday life. A school for example. It is not uncommon for someone who has become a victim of discrimination, racism and bullying to be considered a troublemaker – and who breaks the silence.
What lesson does a school teach when in the end the victim leaves and the perpetrators stay? The consequences can then be seen in everyday life – and in police statistics. Prejudice, hatred and group-related enmity are the triggers for numerous crimes in Munich. Before also took care of their victims, knowing full well that only the tip of the iceberg can be seen. Organizations such as Before or the Research and Information Center on Antisemitism (Rias), municipal institutions such as the Office for Democracy or the newly created contact point against discrimination at Munich schools are doubly and triple important: because they help, because they show what is – and because they talk about it.
The net that the city has woven against racism and right-wing violence can only hold if it is supported by the people of Munich. When we all look the other way, when we stand by victims of discrimination and abuse. And if we don’t deny everyday racism just because most of us can never face the danger of becoming its victims. Talking about real racism – that’s the least we owe as a kindergarten child who asks his parents: “Why do the other kids say I’m ugly and dirty? Why do they say my skin is disgusting?”
