Independent Commission to study sexual abuse in Portugal
The Independent Commission (CI) for the Study of Sexual Abuse against Children in the Church in Portugal that the work carried out on the maltreatment of the Catholic Church in Portugal hopes to be extended later, with another commission, for all maltreatment carried out. the whole in minor, in the sense of “reducing the type that knows about the Church to another type of social organizations starting with the family”, during the period of analysis, L.
and asked about the need to review the evaluation even in a critical sense, for very short, as very short, Laborinho Lúcio considered that “the current case of the Church can help a journalist to take advantage of the validity period in a very short way in minor cases, in virtue of the few”.
Today’s press conference, having started functions, served to reveal that they were collected 42 months after complaints to today’s commission, until the data commissions were already started, which added to eight complaints.
Regarding the cases sent to the Public Ministry, there were 17 at the moment, and there are more than 30 situations that are under analysis to be eventually sent there.
The Independent Commission reinforces today that only the testimonies of surrender until the next 31st were included in the report, asking “all those who had that were abused and did not have their testimony, if they did, they did not allow them to do so while next October 31, using the contact channels that have been available since the beginning», indicated Pedro Strecht, the person responsible for this Commission.
However, new testimonies will appear after October 31, the Commission will guarantee that they will be heard and followed up in the same, which will no longer be possible to include in the data of the report that will be delivered at the end of January 2023.
Regarding the data already used, the number of alleged ones is not yet known, and the Commission indicates whether to speak in a final report. However, Pedro says that the more testimonies now point to the graves over the decades, the more evident it is not, suggesting that there has been a decrease in the time of testimonies, within the spectrum of testimonies that have reached the commission.
Ana Nunes de Almeida reinforced again that «an extrapolation for the entire population will not be carried out», since it is not based on a «representative analysis of the Portuguese population», as happened in France, that this study in a more comprehensive, looking at all types of abuse and in all structures of society. What will be done in a case that many testimonies point to others, is a determination of an «interval» in which those indirect reports that arise from the testimonies of direct people will be situated.
Regarding the working group that is carrying out an analysis of the diocesan archives, Pedro Strecht communicated that the group will deliver the work “by the end of the year”, and that it is now entering the “phase of face-to-face analysis of documents previously requested from the dioceses », as indicated by Pedro Strecht.
Finally, the Independent Commission informed that it will not speak to the media again until the report is presented, and reinforced the request for denunciation through the contacts already merged, which we renew here:
