African gospel arrives in Portugal to sing about freedom
O musical group Soweto Gospel Choir, made up of the best artists from South Africa, arrived in Portugal, in November, for five shows full of rhythm, colors and inspired messages.
The South African choir will present the album ‘Freedom’, as Best World Music Album in 2019, which joins the two grammys already won in the same category.
On November 23, the city of Porto hosts a gospel music show at Coliseu Porto Ageas, followed by the Figueira da Foz Arts and Shows Center on November 24. The South African choir performs on the 25th and 26th of November in Lisbon, at the Centro Cultural de Belém, and ends its national tour in Leira, at the Teatro José Lúcio da Silva on the 27th of November.
On this European tour, the shows are divided into two moments. In the first part the choir presents ‘Freedom’, in memory of the legacy of Nelson Mandela; in the second part, the South African ensemble takes the audience to international and timeless gospel classics, such as the chilling interpretations of “Amazing Grace” and “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.
“Soweto Gospel Choir” was created in 2002 and over the years it has won over the public for the charisma and personality of the shows, in which they interpret traditional and contemporary themes in an exciting harmony and full of South African rhythms.
These performers share the stage with some of the biggest names in world music including U2, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Robert Plant, Celine Dion, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Josh Groban and, recently, Ben Harper.
Tickets are already on sale at UAU.pt, ticketline.pt and at the usual places.
