There are thousands of them passing by every day without really knowing what it is. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are in fact numerous in circulars nearby, without realizing that it is here that one of the largest construction sites in progress in Normandy. There, halfway between the RD60 which connects Caen to Lion-sur-Mer, and the avenue de la Côte de Nacre which runs towards Douvres-la-Délivrande. “And the site is progressing well, in accordance with the initial schedule”, rejoices the general management of the Caen University Hospital (Calvados).
250 workers
The first phase of this colossal project, the overall cost of which is over 500 million euros, is already nearing completion. 250 workers work there daily. This first step concerns the creation of two first buildings of the future CHU. And it is true that unlike the current emblematic 23-storey tower, they are discreet on the horizon line. At the highest, they rise two levels above the ground floor. Moreover, the future hospital, which will be built in 2026, will be split into four large complexes, the highest of which will have five floors.
The first two buildings that will be delivered and occupied first by CHU staff will be those dedicated to logistics, administration and pharmacy on the one hand, and biology-research on the other (see diagram below). The general public will not have access to it.
First Moves
For these two blocks, the structural work has been completed since the spring. Siding for the building dedicated to biology-research was completed this summer. The partitions are in place and major electrical equipment has already been delivered. The air handling units also arrived on site during the summer. “The delivery of biology building is scheduled for next January. »
As to logistics-pharmacy-administration building, the structural work is also completed. The exterior woodwork was installed this summer, before the implementation of the cladding and the installation of partitions inside. “This set should be delivered in April”, completes the management of the establishment.
Once the buildings are completed, a complex phase will begin: the move, or rather, the moves. “For biology, the move will begin from the end of January, with a staggering over several months, due to the complex nature of the operation. “The teams are preparing for it” with the objective of continuity of laboratory activity. »
The second phase has already started
As for the second and last phase of reconstruction, the most important, it has already begun. Its objective is to bring out of the ground the buildings allocated to hospitalizations, education, the medico-technical platform and emergencies in particular. Earthworks began on October 3.
This second phase will have an impact on the organization of car parks. The P4 and P5 car parks (on the current emergency side), reserved for staff, will gradually disappear, since this is where the heart of the future hospital will be. It is for this reason that the P11 car park, at the corner of the Lion-sur-Mer road and the RD401 (opposite the Chinese restaurant Le Palais du Printemps and a washing station) was created. Also, an aerial car park with 850 spaces is planned to complete the parking offer. The opening of the new hospital, then rebuilt, is hoped for 2026.
