Key events
That’s it for our Euro 2024 qualification draw coverage. I can’t stop thinking about how unlucky Stephen Kenny was. Ireland could get Switzerland and Israel or Denmark and Finland; they will play the Netherlands and France instead.
Here’s our draw report – cheers!
Most home nations will be happy with the draw. But it was a stink for the Republic of Ireland, which is along with France, the Netherlands and Greece. Good luck with that.

It’s almost time for the actual draw. Huh and really huh.
“If you let me be the negative of your positive,” says Ian Copestake, “Klinsmann’s time in the UK was a disaster… because he single-handedly introduced diving to our football!”
“There is no list of underrated players is complete without Ian Crook,” says Phil Withall. “Having already been disadvantaged by playing for Norwich, he was unfortunate to play at a time when England had a host of world-class midfielders. The man was the bridesmaid who should have been the bride…”
“I offered to host the draw next to my gaffe in Frankfurt, but messages were not returned,” sobs Ian Copestake. “I think the offer to be Jake the Poacher to their various pots may not translate well.”
Jurgen Klinsmann and Karl-Heinz Riedle are next on stagewhich is a good excuse to remember what a magnificent scorer Klinsmann was.
Gianluca Zambrotta and Demetrio Albertini, who helps with the draw, has just walked onto the stage with the European Champion’s trophy. Albertini is a decent candidate for The Joy of Six: Underrated Players.
Now it’s time to assemble Euro 2020/1. As I type, Paul Pogba has just scored a beauty to give France a 3-1 win against Switzerland. They will play Spain in the quarter-finals.
The German singer Lena is on stage, singing the song Looking for Love. I’m not sure I have anything to add to that.
Preamble
Hello and welcome to the live stream of the Euro 2024 qualification draw in Frankfurt. You know the drill: endless preamble—no, not that—and then a bunch of balls. Fittingly, Euro 2024 will have 24 teams (Euro 2072 will be a mess), and that’s how they decide.
-
Germany automatically qualifies as host
-
There will be ten groups, seven with five teams and three with six. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically.
-
The last three places will be decided in the playoffs, and entry will depend on performances in the Nations League.
