Gatehouse rented in the city of Salzburg
politics
For many years now, the city of Salzburg has rented out a vacant listed building. In the so-called gatehouse right behind the Capuchin monastery, however, the new tenant has to pay for a large part of the renovation himself.
The one-story gatehouse or “forest warden’s house” from the 17th century is on Stefan-Zweig-Weg between the Capuchin monastery and the Zweig villa. It has been empty for the last eight years, and the last residents have not stayed overnight, although this was stipulated in the rental agreement with the city. They had to be sued out.
Now a former SPÖ local councilor is the new tenant of the almost 70 square meter house on 200 square meters of land after it was advertised in daily newspapers. This was decided unanimously by the city’s building and environmental committee. He pays around 500 euros monthly rent for this. However, the renovation costs are high: the city calculates more than 350,000 euros. The building needs a new roof, a new bathroom and new electrical wiring.
19 interested parties, most of them wanted to buy the house
It costs the city up to 299,000 euros. But everything beyond that, probably at least 60,000 euros, has to be paid by the former municipal councillor, who now works in the private sector. He has to present the plan in a few months. The city says that if you had done everything yourself, the rental price would be about twice as much, i.e. 1,000 euros. There were 19 interested parties for the gatehouse, most of which would have wanted to buy it.
