Autumn in Athens comes with classical music in Gennadeio
Maria Georgopoulou, head of the Gennadei Library.
It has become an Athenian institution, signifying the arrival of autumn, and has fanatical supporters. Rightly so, because it’s no small thing to be able to enjoy some of the most talented young musicians in the world before they spread their wings and “fly” to the top. The reason for Curtis On Tour, with the students of one of the best music academies in the world, based in Philadelphia, USA, which every September makes a stop in Athens, as part of its tour. This year, in fact, the European tour started from our city and will continue in October in Germany (Konzerthaus, in Berlin), Italy (Salone Dugentesco, in Vercelli) and Spain (Auditori Teulada Moraira, in Alicante and Fundación Juan March, in Madrid ).
Since the autumn of 2015, we have the privilege of seeing them in the Gennadius Library, thanks to the Greek-German Schwarz foundation, which now also has a seat in Athens, with the aim of promoting intercultural dialogue, as well as to Baroness Nina von Maltzahn, who supports here and many years the international tours of Curtis students around the world. Curtis Academy has earned a worldwide reputation for its focus on the constant “live” contact of its students and graduates with the public. They “learn by playing” and offer classical music lovers the authentic youthful passion, freshness, but also that slight shyness that characterizes them, as they are still at the beginning of their career. In Athens, however, they were applauded and received the love of the public in all four of their performances, which were also broadcast online. From the 27th to the 30th of September, hundreds of lucky Athenians saw in the Kochen Hall of Gennadei a musical group for soprano and on time composed of the famous Music Academy. They performed “Nature Songs”, commissioned by Curtis from Academy teacher Richard Danielpour, especially for the tour. This new work is based on Antonio Vivaldi’s sonnets written to accompany The Four Seasons.
Curtis alumni Andrea Obisso, Timotheus Petrin, Pallavi Mahindara, Elena Peroni, Joseph Tancredi, Heisu Lee and Milos Repiski performed works by Mozart, Brahms, Schubert, Debussy, Arvo Pertrado dialectically, Arvo Pertrado, Retti, and their stom. The most moving thing, however, regarding Gennadei’s classical music evenings, is that among the audience are many young Greek musicians, who come to see their contemporaries up close.
