VGT warns: Authorities in Salzburg are sleeping! | VGT
Rest days for Fiaker horses are still not fulfilled
Vienna (OTS) – The results of renewed documentation by the VGT regarding the rest days that Fiaker horses are to be granted in Salzburg are shocking. Already in July 2022, within just three weeks, over 70 violations documented. Now, a five-day follow-up from early September 2022 shows that nothing has changed yet.
Over 70 times within just under three weeks in July of this year, the day off that the Fiacre horses in Salzburg are entitled to after a day’s work in the city according to the award criteria was not fulfilled. It has been documented that horses were even used in the city for up to four days at a time. Breaching the award criteria actually provides for severe consequences, namely a one-time written reminder for the first violation and immediate withdrawal of the permit for the stand for a further violation.
But a follow-up by VGT activists, who documented the horses for another five days at the beginning of September 2022, shows: Nothing has changed! From September 3rd to 7th, 13 violations were documented again – and that only within five days! Most of these violations – seven in total – again concern Fiaker chairman Daniel Schmeisser, who was also responsible for the most violations of the rest days in July.
Georg Prinz from the VGT is stunned: How can it be that after such serious abuses were uncovered in July 2022, consequences were drawn, yes, the carriages continue as before and horses are denied the contractually stipulated rest days? What’s going on in the city of Salzburg? Are contracts and agreements here just worthless paper that you can confidently read?
The horses are suffering and it is up to the city to enforce the animal welfare agreements and the consequences laid down in the contract with the carriages. How Mayor Preuner, after the discovery of such abuses – I also remember the animal cruelty with the chilli paste – can even think of a positive official report that leads to an extension of the contract is completely nonsensical.
This contract expires at the end of April 2023 – after such brazen breaches of contract, there is not a single reason to extend it again.
One Petition for a Fiacre ban in Salzburg already signed more than 22,000 people.
