City of Salzburg – Great success: 110 bikes made “winter fit” at the bike service
Cycling to work – more and more employees in the city of Salzburg are switching to the environmentally friendly means of transport. This is good for your health, the environment and your wallet. The in-house health promotion supports the cyclists and offers bike service days twice a year. At the beginning of October, around 110 employees offered the offer so that they can travel safely even in the cold and wet season.
Mayor Harald Preuner and Municipal Director Max Tischler are pleased: “The annual bike service for employees is now a fixed and popular part of the city healthy spring and autumn program.” The internal health promotion also supports the commute on two wheels.
Rudi, the mechanic of the “happy-bike” company, changes around 70 brake shoes and 22 headlights during the bike service days, thus ensuring safe “cycling”. In addition, stands were mounted, brake cables renewed, bells and saddles exchanged, hoses changed, reflectors attached, pedals and grips renewed and the gears made fit again with new sprockets.
The numerous bike service days will be held again on five days in mid-March, when the rest of the cyclists have to get their bikes ready for spring.
health factor commuting to work
“Coming to work is a good way to get a healthy dose of exercise every day without a lot of effort and thus counteract many illnesses. Because a lack of exercise can lead to cardiovascular diseases and diabetes”, Karin Enzinger from Stadtgesund, the in-house health promotion.
Around every fourth distance traveled in Austria is a journey to work. Currently, the majority of cases drive to work. Depending on the state, only 10 to 25 percent of cases come to work by bike or on foot. 38 percent of the commutes in Austria are shorter than five kilometers, more than half shorter than ten kilometers. This means that a large part of the commute to work is within cycling distance. (Source: VCÖ)
