Police: Fire in Helsinki department store caused by a technical fault | News
The authorities continue to investigate the fire, but do not suspect foul play.
According to the police, the fire at the Sokos department store in the center of Helsinki last Friday was caused by a faulty technical device.
The target was located in the headquarters area, the officers added.
“The police do not suspect a crime, but the investigation into the cause of the fire continues,” the researcher Juhani Vuorisalo Yle reported from the Helsinki Police Department.
A spokesperson for the S group chain, which owns the Sokos store, said that the fire was limited to the first floor and did not cause any injuries.
The store underwent a smoke extraction and ionization check on Monday to ensure the building is safe to shop and work in, and reopened Tuesday morning.
The S-Market grocery store and the Hesburger fast food restaurant in the same building sustained only minor damage, both of which reopened to customers on Saturday.
