Sweden nominates Cannes winner ‘Boy From Heaven’ for Oscar entry 2023 | News
Tarik Saleh’s Boy from heaven has been selected by Sweden as its submitter for the best international feature Oscar race.
Boy from heaven world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in competition where it won the award for Best Screenplay. It will be screened at the upcoming BFI London Film Festival (October 5-16) and will open the Stockholm International Film Festival in November.
The film was chosen by the Swedish Oscar committee’s jury over a shortlist of three titles that included I am Zlatan directed by Jens Sjögren and Magnus Gerttens Nelly & Nadine.
Set in Cairo, Saleh’s political thriller is about a fisherman’s son who is thrown into a brutal power struggle between Egypt’s religious and political elite.
The film is produced by Atmo in co-production with Film i Väst, SVT, Haymaker, Mikael Ahlström Films, Bufo (Finland), Memento Production (France), Arte France Cinéma, Final Cut For Real (Denmark) and others.
Memento International is handling international sales while Triart Film will distribute the film domestically.
Saleh previously won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival for his performanceThe Nile Hilton Incident.
Sweden has submitted a total of almost 100 films for the Oscars since 1956. Its last nomination came in 2014 for Ruben Östlund’s Force majeure while Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander was the country’s last winner in 1983.
