Doctoral researcher
for a fixed-term employment relationship 1.1.2023-31.12.2026. The position is at the Department of Philosophy, History and Art Research.
A doctoral researcher works for 48 months to complete doctoral studies doctoral program in history and cultural heritage. The position is related to a research project funded by the European Research Council Medical electricity, embodied experiences and the construction of knowledge in Europe and the Atlantic world, ca. 1740–1840 (ELBOW). ELBOW, led by Dr. Soile Ylivuori, uses medical electricity as a case study to find out how patients’ bodily and experiential knowledge influenced the construction of scientific knowledge. The doctoral researcher will be a member of a four-person project team. The candidate will survey and compare 18th-century electromedicine practices and treatments in Paris and Berlin, and possibly also in London and New England. As part of his doctoral research, the PhD researcher will also help build and promote an open access database of who has received e-treatments, when, where and how. Typically, research examines both archival and printed medical electronic sources in French, German, and English.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The doctoral researcher must have a master’s degree in history, history of science or a similar field. Prerequisites are also good collaboration skills, basic computer skills, and proven ability and motivation for independent research and for completing postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree in accordance with the study plan and research proposal. We require excellent English language skills and the ability to read handwritten historical sources in French and German. Previous knowledge of experience history, science or medicine is considered an advantage, as well as previous experience with database work.
The appointee must either already have the right to complete a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki at the start of the appointment, or apply for the right and receive it within a six-month trial period after the appointment. WHAT WE OFFER

The position is full-time and funded for 48 months. Salary is based on levels 2-3 of the requirements level table for teaching and research staff of the Finnish universities’ salary system. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary is approx. 2400-2600 euros/month, depending on the qualifications and experience of the appointee. The employment contract includes a six-month trial period.

- Two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant’s academic profile, preferably from the MA supervisor
