Children in conflict zones are a priority for Malta as a member of the UNSC – Borg
The subject of children and armed conflict is one of Malta’s main priorities as the country begins its two-year mandate as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, said the -Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg in a conference on the margins of the United Nations General. Assembly.
Borg is currently in New York attending the 77th edition of the United Nations General Assembly.
“Malta remains committed to continue working to ensure that all the necessary humanitarian aid is provided so that the rights of children affected by Armed Conflicts remain protected and safeguarded,” said Borg.
He said that one of the priorities will be children in armed conflict once Malta starts serving in the United Nations Security Council in January 2023. Borg added that the country will continue to push for peace and in favor of -humanitarian aid.
In recent weeks, the government has worked with the SRSG-CAAC Office in collaboration with the University of Malta on a virtual summer school in the Protection of Children in Armed Conflicts.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs stressed that the international community cannot fail in conflict zones, and said that communities must unite to ensure that children’s rights are protected and safeguarded.
Chinese media reported that Borg met Chinese State Councilor and foreign minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the general assembly.
According to Xinhua, Wang said that mutual respect, equal treatment, concern for each other’s main concerns, and understanding of the chosen path and development model have all contributed to the healthy development and stable bilateral relations.
This year marks the 50th anniversary since Malta and China established diplomatic relations.
According to the Chinese media, “China appreciates Malta’s firm adherence to the one China policy”, as Borg said Malta fully adheres to the one China policy and believes that Taiwan is part from China.
Allegedly, Wang told Borg that China is ready to expand mutually beneficial cooperation with Malta in an “all-out” way and “push bilateral relations to a new level”.
Borg reiterated Malta’s support for the China Belt and Road project.
Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden said that US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
During an interview on CBS 60 Minutes, Biden said that if there is an unprecedented attack, US forces will defend the self-governing island claimed by China.
