Britain bought Belgian howitzers to send to Ukraine
The British government bought Belgian-made howitzers from commercial firms for their supply to Ukraine.
We are talking about those guns that the Belgian government once sold to businessmen, and later refused to buy them back due to the high price, reports Ukrinform with reference to the Belgian publication. VRT.
“Belgian army howitzers, which the Belgian government wants to make in Ukraine, are finally located at their destination, but with the help of the British government. The Belgian Army sold these used and upgraded howitzers for €15,000 per skin, but then found out that the system could cost €150,000 to buy back, resulting in the cancellation. The British government had no such doubts and bought the howitzers at the market price,” the publication says.
As noted, the Belgian army sold 28 M109 heavy howitzers to two private companies back in 2015. After the beginning of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, in May of this year, the Belgian government tried to buy back these self-propelled artillery installations, but came to the conclusion that the price of the purchase, which was requested by the merchants, was too high. The supply of these weapons could cost 5 million euros. According to experts cited by the publication, the price was moderate, some howitzers were modernized and equipped with semi-automatic charging systems.
As a result, Britain bought these self-propelled guns at the market price for their further deployment to the front in Ukraine.
VRT notes that Belgium also supplies weapons and military equipment to Ukraine. also, since the beginning of the conflict, Ukraine has received body armor and helmets, small arms and anti-tank systems.
As reported by Ukrinform, Belgium, like other countries of the European Union, showed firm solidarity with Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion. Since the beginning of the new stage of Russian aggression against Ukraine, according to the Belgian government, the country has supplied Ukraine with weapons and military equipment worth 55 million euros, and intends to continue this support.
