First MusiKunsTheater in the Salzburg Collegiate Church
“MusiKunsTheater” is the name of a new cultural festival that is currently taking place in the Kollegienkirche in Salzburg and is to be held every two years in the future. According to Christian Wallisch-Breitsching from the Catholic University Community (KHG) Salzburg The aim is to bring together the three art forms of music, fine arts and theater on an equal footing with a concept that has not yet been realized in Salzburg, in order to appeal to all Salzburg residents and tourists interested in art across generations. Networking with representatives, in particular of the free cultural scene in Salzburg, is sought, cooperation with the most diverse art sectors and cultural workers is sought. Admission is free.
The KHG employee referred to some concerts that are offered at unusual times, namely late in the evening. The “MusiKunsTheater” should have a new focus in each edition, for 2022 the motto “Between the times” was chosen. The topic of current fears and needs of many people would be addressed until September 25th – and with free admission, explained Wallisch-Breitsching.
Tree as a symbol of life and death
This is particularly evident in a tree sculpture that can be seen in the Collegiate Church throughout the festival week: placed in the center circle of the church on an island built for this purpose, this tree now appears in green, full splendor as a symbol of summer, life and hope, then in barren form and dark color for winter, mischief and death. According to the organizers, the surface of the tree, which is folded using an origami technique, also points to the aspect of the preciousness of time due to its lengthy production process.
In addition to this central contribution to the visual arts, the American composer John Cage dominates musically. His processing of the European operatic tradition is performed in “Europeras 3&4” by pianists and voices of the Salzburg Chamber Opera as well as turntables on September 25th at 7pm under the musical direction of Gordon Safari; Premiere was on September 17th. Cage’s “principle of freedom and the random” is implemented artistically. Part of the evening was also exclusively for the festival by the young Salzburg author Anja Bachl, who wrote texts on the motto “Between the Times”, which the ensemble of the chamber opera realized in a free improvised manner.

Theater premiere with topical reference
Finally, author, director and actor Konstantin Paul titled his theatrical premiere on September 23 at 7 p.m. The play is about a rehearsal of Euripides’ Iphigenia in Aulis between a Ukrainian actress – played by Solomia Kushnir – and a German director, who raises the not frictionless question of the relationship between the two countries and the two individuals. According to the announcement, a topical issue in world politics is whether peace can be better achieved with or without weapons.
The Kollegienkirche is not only the university church, but also sees itself as “Salzburg’s art church”, as Christian Wallisch-Breitching puts it. Not only the Salzburg Festival, but also many young artists were repeatedly inspired by the church interior. The Kollegienkirche Salzburg/Universitätspfarrre and the Salzburg Chamber Opera, as organizers of the first “MusiKunsTheater”, invited young artists to give shape to their ideas in dialogue with the church space and to create a “total work of art”.
