The shortage of nursing staff is causing massive problems. In Salzburg, hope is placed in a work foundation for care and social affairs: it was founded two years ago by Caritas, a welfare organization, Volkshilfe and the Red Cross, and the first graduates are already in everyday work.
There are currently 230 Salzburg residents in training, 60 will start the program in autumn – the foundation is generally well received. Elfriede Stöger from Altenmarkt (Pongau) is one of the first graduates of the care foundation: she completed her training as a social worker and did her internship at Mathiashof in Fuschl (Flachgau). She was also employed there as an employee. “I dropped out of work for health reasons and didn’t really know how to continue. But the desire to work with people was there very early on,” said Stöger. According to the specialist social worker, the training was one for life.
Good model for career changers
Job-seekers who are interested in nursing professions or want to switch are referred to the labor foundation by the AMS. Then it is considered which training is suitable and a suitable internship company that is looking for employees is mediated. “The model is very important, above all that training is also maintained, that career changers have the opportunity to do such training and the support of such a scholarship is very important,” says the facility manager of Mathiashof, Stefan Krejci.

“Entry must be such that people can afford to live”
The aim is for the trainees – like Elfriede Stöger at Mathiashof – to be employed on a permanent basis after they have completed their training. “The nursing profession is one of the safest professions in the coming decades and it is a profession with many development opportunities,” said the managing director of the labor foundation and Caritas director, Johannes Dines. You see that people can develop from home help to qualified specialists – but it just needs an entry – “and it has to be such that they can afford life,” says Dines.
