Less diesel – situation remains tense

The situation on the fuel market remains extremely tense, mineral oil traders warn. In the east of Austria there are already no more diesel at some filling stations. In Salzburg, it is mainly corporate customers with their own filling stations who are feeling the effects.
He can no longer deliver pellets, heating oil only within weeks instead of days, says energy trader Franz Leikermoser. In the case of diesel transport, the transport and construction industry in particular, whose domestic filling stations cannot be filled in time, says Leikermoser. “When the daily quota is reached, we close the books. With large companies that were used to simply saying: deliver me 30,000 liters of diesel tomorrow – that’s no longer possible in this form,” explains Leikermoser.
Customers currently have to wait several days for the diesel they have ordered. The prices are also currently fluctuating greatly. “The most important thing is: you get the goods and they also have their price, which is not easy to deal with at the moment – neither with one nor with the other.”
No rapid improvement in sight at the moment
A rapid change in the market situation is unlikely, as there are no quick solutions in sight. “We can balance the whole thing out a bit with import volumes, but there is currently no surplus either for diesel or for heating oil.”
There are several reasons for this, says Leikermoser: the embargo on Russian diesel, the failure of the OMV refinery in Schwechat and also problems in German refineries, which have delivery problems in shipping due to low water levels in the Rhine.
However, OMV will be able to ramp up production again in the first half of October. This was announced by OMV boss Alfred Stern on Thursday in the business journalists’ club. The refinery is currently running at just over 20 percent capacity due to an accident during a major overhaul in June.
