Haus der Kunst Munich, Past Statements, Present Futures, Forum, October 7 and 8, 2022
The #Haus der #Kunst in Munich is hosting a multi-day forum on October 7th and 8th, 2022 entitled Past Statements – Present Futures, additional accompanying program on October 9th, 2022.
The forum embraces the act of collective memory with a transnational perspective. Interdisciplinary artists, thinkers, philosophers and activists discuss the topic, whose #research and practice make the historical dimension of the present moment visible. A cooperation of the Haus der Kunst with the cultural department of the state capital #Munich and the Freispiel Kulturagentur.
Recently, in Munich and around the world, the question has been discussed to what extent monuments in our cities reflect our present-day ideals. Obviously this is not always the case. Monuments reflect the attitudes of the time when they were created. How can a diverse, democratic present face up to outdated attitudes? With the current debates, collective memory itself has gained relevance – as has the question of how contemporary memory can be expressed in new forms. From both a transnational perspective and with a #focus on Munich, the forum deals with collective remembrance.
Behind every #monument there are countless debates, partly contradictory views and a large number of people directly or indirectly affected. Traditional monuments often do not reflect this complexity and offer a reduced, supposedly uniform reading of communal memory. It is not uncommon for precisely those who are actually at issue not to be heard. With this in mind, each of the panels and workshops WILL attempt to significantly expand the general understanding of a monument. It is about previously neglected aspects such as acts of forgetting or repression, time, processes of change and monuments that only exist in language or sound, or those that occupy digital spaces. In this way, the forum wants to treat memory as something active that needs to be constantly renegotiated.
This approach reflects the self-image of the Haus der Kunst and the cultural department of the city of Munich. With artists and thinkers who have recently featured in each of the institutions’ respective programs – or who we plan to work with in the future – both organizations are about being hosts. The forum wants to create a space where people can meet, discuss and exchange ideas. The goal is to track down postcolonial, migrant, moving, previously little heard or repressed narratives and thus enrich the collective memory in public space.

Upcoming exhibitions and events
Tune, Sound Residences
For the series of short sound residencies »Tune« at Haus der Kunst, artists are invited monthly to present performances, screenings and installations. The series, which pays special attention to artists who tell stories interwoven with sound and step out of linear time, becomes natural. In dialogue with the current exhibitions, the focus will be on the texture and form of sound as well as different types of performance.
Emiranda, installation and performance, September 23-26, 2022
In September »Tune« brings Emiranda to Haus der Kunst, the merger of the two artists Toxe and Mechatok. For »Tune«, Tove Agelii and Emir Timur Tokdemir create a fictional sonic urban landscape in the form of a sound work composed in a loop, which is activated by the two performances on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 23 and 24, 2022. The first evening is an extension of the new sound work. Speech fragments are artificially produced over a carpet, urban-looking »field recordings« and reduced synthesizer compositions are recited. The following evening, Emiranda will present works from her new album with #live #electronics and vocals. Both nights, producer and DJ Tobias Lee, known as Why Be, will perform an opening set. On September 24, 2022 there will be an artist talk with Emir Timur Tokdemir and Tove Agelii. Participation is free of charge.
The next »Tune« Sound Residencies
- Caterina Barbieri, October 21 and 22, 2022
- Okkyung Lee, November 25 and 26, 2022
The African Desperate by Martine Syms, film premiere October 10, 2022, 7 p.m
Together with the film distribution and streaming service MUBI, Haus der Kunst is presenting the German premiere of the film The African Desperate (OmeU) by the American artist Martine Syms. The film follows young artist Palace (Diamond Stingily)’s last day and night of debauchery at a mostly white, middle-class art school outside of New York. With its sympathetic conceptual and humorous poignancy, The African Desperate takes us on a quest for artistic self-realization amidst the social adversities of the art world. The film will be shown as part of the current exhibition by Joan Jonas, who has influenced numerous generations of artists in their cross-media work.
Super Books 3, November 11, 2022, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., November 12, 2022, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m
