EuroBasket: Poland advances to the semi-finals after defeating Slovenia
The Polish basketball team defeated defending champion Slovenia 90:87 (29:26, 29:13, 6:24, 26:24) in the quarterfinals in Berlin and qualified for the semifinals of the European Championship. This is the red and white’s first promotion to the top four since 1971.
Poland played in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1997, when they lost 62:72 to Greece in Barcelona. Now in Berlin, she defeated defending champion Slovenia with one of the NBA’s biggest stars, Luka Dončić of the Dallas Mavericks, in a game that had many twists and turns and kept the tension going until the final seconds.

The Polish hero of the match was Mateusz Ponitka, the captain of the team had a triple-double: 26 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

This is the first time since 2009 that a defending champion has been knocked out in the quarter-finals – then it was Russia, the gold from Madrid in 2007.
The Poles are now k in Friday’s semifinal against France, the Olympic runner-up (17:15).
