A Young Maltese Girl Suffers From A Rare Condition Calls For Help
Ella Debono is a 12-year-old girl who suffers from central heart disease (CCD), a rare condition that affects essential parts of her body, and now, she is asking for financial help to seek timely treatment in England.
“I am Ella Debono and I am asking for your help from the bottom of my heart,” said a page on Facebook dedicated to the girl.
When Ella was born, the doctors immediately recognized that she had CCD, a condition which, according to her Facebook, she is the only one to suffer from in Malta.
“In a nutshell, CCD affects the muscles, the respiratory system, and the bones.”
“I started walking when I was three years old and my mother, who uses a wheelchair, started to notice signs of autism. I was eventually diagnosed with both autism and ADHD and to this day I still can’t run and jump like all the other kids.”
Ella explained that she started therapy with a number of different professionals including a speech therapist, occupational therapist and physiotherapist.
“Physiotherapy helped me keep my balance when I walk because I used to fall a lot,” she said.
“Of course, they come with a fee. The older I get, the more the costs increase because my needs are continuous, especially when it comes to physiotherapy.”
She went on to explain that she has scoliosis and hyperlordosis, and these issues are only getting worse. If she does not do the necessary therapy, her back will continue to bend and she will have to have an operation – such an operation will leave her wheelchair bound.
“To try to prevent all this, I will need intensive therapy to go to England every six months.”
However, despite the cards she has been dealt, Ella is still a happy girl who enjoys all the things that other children do.
One of her passions is music, she likes to sing while her fingers dance on the piano keys.
As you can see, Ella is full of life and energy, but her condition is a lifelong one. So that means it comes with a lot of financial burdens that can sometimes stop her from getting the treatment she needs.
Donations for the girl can be sent on the BOV mobile app through the number 99864524 or a BOV account with the IBAN number: MT34VALL22013000 00004002.
