Ukraine: Over 14,000 casualties so far, but ‘actual numbers are likely to be significantly higher’ – United Nations
On Friday, Matilda Bogner, head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Geneva, presented some of the findings of her latest report to journalists. It shows that nearly 5,800 people have been killed in the conflict and that the situation of prisoners of war in the Russian-held possessions is “worrying”.
The conflict is now in its seventh month and Bogen’s team has so far confirmed 14,059 civilian casualties, with 5,767 killed and 8,292 injured.
“The actual numbers are likely significantly higher,” she added.
Bogner spoke from the city of Odessa in southern Ukraine. The UN human rights monitoring mission has been in the country since 2014 after fighting between government forces and separatists began in the east.
The next report will be published on September 27th.
