Debate about flood protection in Oberpinzgau
politics
In Mittersill (Pinzgau), flood protection and the city’s handling of commercial space are the subject of debate. The chairman of the Alpine Club criticizes the expansion of existing commercial areas. It requires an “overall view” of the likely planned protective structures in the valleys of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
All worries are unfounded, emphasizes the mayor of Mittersill. Citizens fear that up to six hectares of additional space could be dedicated in Mittersill in the western commercial area and the retention basin to protect against flooding could be further reduced.
Criticism of prospective protective structures
Mittersillerin Claudia Wolf says that as chairwoman of the Alpine Club, she represents 56,000 members: “We are not just a mountaineering club, but also a recognized nature conservation organization. Of course we are thinking about how the Alps can develop further. I want an overall view. It is unacceptable that we build up our most valuable areas in the national park valleys and at the same time continue outside as before.”
Mayor rejects criticism
Mayor Wolfgang Viertler says that they actually have their say with a local entrepreneurial family that played a key role in the recent expansion of Mittersill’s flood protection system. He refers to resolutions and agreements with the community: “We do not question that, but we have also made it clear that it is a wrong moment. We want to accompany the protective measures positively. It’s not about six, but only about two hectares. But even those are not an issue at the moment.”
