“Portugal had the worst winter cereal campaign in the last 105 years”, he lamented on Facebook
“Wake up people! Portugal had this year the second worst winter cereal campaign in the last 105 years. The bitter people and minister [da Agricultura e da Alimentação, Maria do Céu Antunes, figura na imagem] laugh… Wake up people”, reads a publish of August 19 on Facebook, sent to the Polygraph with a request for fact checking.
In fact, on August 18, 2022, the National Statistics Institute (INE) published the most recent “Agricultural Forecasts” bulletin (you can consult here), from the title to “drought for the second winter cereal campaign in the last 05 years“.
“Agricultural offers, on 31 July, point to a cereal season marked by severe to extreme drought who enjoyed a large part of the vegetative cycle of the winter cereal. The current campaign must be the second worst since there are systematic records, only superior to the production of 2012 and close to 2005 (also years of extreme droughts)”, informs INE in the document.

The cereal campaign was marked by the drought situation during the vegetative development phase, with many crops showing inhomogeneous stands and short ears.
