Slovak chemist Fortischem has announced layoffs, problems give her energy. Several people lost their jobs
Slovak chemist Fortischem from the Kaprain group of entrepreneur Karel Pražák has announced mass layoffs, 362 workers may lose their jobs. The company justified the decision mainly by high energy prices, the media reported today. A similar step in the country has already been announced, for example, by producers of aluminum and ferroalloy.
“Recently, the company has been facing a very unfavorable economic situation, which is caused by sanctions and especially extremely high energy prices. The different approach to the regulation of energy prices in Europe does not allow our company to reflect energy prices in product prices and makes our company uncompetitive,” the chairman of the board of directors told Fortische Ján Křička. He added that Slovakia has not yet experienced compensation for high energy prices.
Fortischem operates in the field and supply of chemical raw materials, especially in the production of products for chlorine processing, further in the field of production of basic carbide equipment and technical gases, production of polyvinyl chloride and its processing products and other and special chemicals.
The chemist reduced the loss to about ten million euros, thus improving the economy by half year-on-year. The company’s previous financial difficulties culminated in its takeover by Kaprain last year. According to the media, the chemist was sold by its previous owner and financier Mario Hoffmann for one euro in order to provide production and work for the company’s 700 employees.
At the time of high energy prices, the Slovak government has not yet announced compensation for businesses. In August, the Slovalco company announced that it would end primary aluminum production at its plant in the town of Žiar nad Hronom in central Slovakia by the end of September.
He justified the move, among other things, by high electricity prices. The decision will affect 300 employees who work full-time in the company. Ferroalloy producer OFZ also announced mass layoffs in the summer.
The unemployment rate in Slovakia was 6.23 percent in July, reaching a new low since the outbreak of the covid-19 epidemic in March 2020.
