moradavaga’s acoustically connected characters in sweden
moradavaga’s Hello stranger! activate square in sweden
A family of giant, friendly, yellow characters made of corrugated cardboard plastic tuber stands among the crowd at Våghustorget in Örebro, Sweden and gathers visitors in a playful way. The interactive public art installation Hello stranger! (Hello stranger!) has been created by the design collective Moradavaga for the 2022 edition of OpenArt, Scandinavia’s largest contemporary art event that activates the lively square in a “provocative” way. Acting as an interconnected analog acoustic system, Hello Stranger! encourages communication between strangers and friends, through an interconnected system of pipes that allows visitors to talk to each other from one end of the square to the other.

a family of acoustically interconnected yellow characters
Moradavaga’s installation presents an ensemble of acoustically connected, cartoon-like characters occupying Våghustorget, one of the city’s livelier squares. Built primarily from corrugated yellow plastic tubing, the figures look like “a colorful group or family of funny aliens, who can be seen as friendly aliens from outer space, or blown-up insects with human expressions”.
In an ongoing exploration of the “string phone,” the design collective here again uses a similar strategy to allow visitors to communicate with each other from opposite ends of the square through the characters. By presenting an alternative interactive and provocative strategy to activate public spaces, the concept establishes an analog communication game. An echo of the tin can telephone of childhood with connecting cord or wire, Hello stranger! allows visitors to converse with each other through the large fabric tubes and the figures’ mouths and eyes. Strangers and friends are encouraged to interact, engage in entertaining conversations and form new acquaintances through the installation.
