For the third time, the Christmas tree for Marienplatz comes from the Weilheim-Schongau district
For the third time in a row, the Christmas tree for Munich’s Marienplatz comes from the district. No tree has been selected yet, the communities can register until mid-September. In 2020 the tree came from Steingaden, last year from Peiting. This year the mulled wine stand should also work.
Weilheim-Schongau – Last year there was great joy in Peiting, as a mighty silver fir was allowed to be placed for the Christmas market at Munich’s Marienplatz. In a complex operation, the 27 meter high tree weighing around three tons was felled in the municipality’s cemetery – it had been chosen as the most beautiful tree from the district’s three (we reported). The year before, the Christmas tree also came from the Pfaffenwinkel: The municipality of Steingaden jumped in at short notice with a stately spruce for Munich’s twin city of Verona, which had been canceled due to Corona.
You are already looking for a suitable tree
Because no Christmas market could take place in Munich again in both years due to the pandemic, the district is allowed to send a tree for the Christmas market from Monday, November 21st to Saturday, December 24th this year. As confirmed by the district office, one is already looking for the most suitable tree. The member communities still have until mid-September to contact the project manager Martin Berger from the district financial administration. According to the Protocol Office of the City of Munich, no tree has yet been inspected because the ownership structure still has to be clarified.
The most beautiful Christmas tree is now being sought, the communities can get in touch
The search has been going on for quite a while: the mayors were informed in advance in the spring, and in mid-July the individual municipalities and cities were written to look around in their municipal area. When it comes to choosing the tree, not only does the state capital of Munich have a say, but also District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiss.
Of course, a replacement tree planting is also planned this time, informs Berger. For Peiting, a new tree may even be planted this year. Incidentally, Peiting is going its own way today and does not even put up a Christmas tree.
Because the Christmas market had been canceled last year, there were long faces
There were long faces, especially among the clubs, last year when the Munich Christmas market was canceled again, after all there is an information stand with the Pfaffenwinkel tourism association. In addition, the municipalities are allowed to run a mulled wine stand in the magnificent courtyard of Munich City Hall and thus take care of the physical well-being of the Christmas market visitors.
The persistently high numbers in autumn 2021 simply did not allow for this. “Reason prevailed,” recalls the project manager. That is why everything was done to start a new start in spring 2022, which also worked thanks to the promise of Mayor Dieter Reiter. “So far I’m confident,” said Berger. “If the Wiesn can take place in tents, there should also be an outdoor Christmas market.”
“It’s an honor to be given the opportunity to again”
With a view to the 50th anniversary of the Weilheim-Schongau district and the simultaneous 50th anniversaries such as Munich’s pedestrian zone, subway and Olympic Games, this year’s date is all the more fitting: “It’s an honor to have the opportunity again this year to present itself as a tourist destination within the framework of business development,” says Berger.
Since it is approximately the same time frame as 2021, it is about the same applications that were received, all municipalities were there at the time. There is probably one exception this year: Steingaden. Because the place has its own stand as a tree donor 2020 for the entire time.
The information: The organization of the mulled wine and information stand will start in mid-September. Please send applications from the individual locations to the project manager, Martin Berger, at [email protected].
