Finland, Sweden, Denmark Vote support to limit gas prices in the EU
The prime ministers of Finland, Sweden and Denmark sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday in which they supported her proposal to limit gas prices in the EU to cool down the energy market, the Finnish government’s communications department said.
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – September 8, 2022) The prime ministers of Finland, Sweden and Denmark sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday, supporting her proposal to limit gas prices in the EU to cool down the energy market, said the communication department of the Finnish government.
On Wednesday, von der Leyen announced the European Commission’s intention to propose a price cap on imports of Russian gas and liquefied natural gas into the EU amid the energy crisis.
“The Prime Ministers stressed the importance of taking the necessary measures to moderate the price of gas and stabilize the energy derivatives market. They also expressed their support for coordinated EU-wide measures to reduce energy consumption,” a statement read.
On Friday, von der Leyen said the EU may impose limits on the price of Russian natural gas after G7 finance ministers confirmed their intention to impose price caps on Russian oil as part of expanded sanctions against Moscow.
Russia promised to stop exporting its oil to the states that would enforce the limits.
On February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in response to calls for help from the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk. The West and its allies have responded by imposing sweeping sanctions on Russia, with the EU vowing to end its dependence on Russian energy supplies. The bloc has already approved seven sanctions packages against Moscow, including a phase-out of Russian oil. The crisis in Ukraine and the sanctions have resulted in disruptions in supply chains and a spike in energy prices worldwide.
